Iran retaliates against the U.S.

Two military bases in Iraq that house American troops were struck by more than a dozen Iranian missiles. U.S. officials are still assessing casualties and damage, but Trump tweeted “So far, so good!” CNN Politics

	The strike, which Iran’s supreme leader said was revenge for the killing of its top military general, marks a serious escalation in the conflict between the U.S. and Iran. “This region will not accept the presence of America,” he said. Reuters

A Boeing 737 crashed, killing all 176 people on board. The Ukraine International Airlines flight departed Tehran for Kyiv and went down shortly after takeoff. Initial inspections reportedly pointed to a technical failure. (The jet did not have the Boeing feature blamed for previous crashes.) The Wall Street Journal

A fresh impeachment standoff: Mitch McConnell said he was ready to move forward with a trial without agreeing up front to allow more witnesses. But Nancy Pelosi has shown no inclination to send the House’s impeachment articles to the Senate, the formal step necessary to kickstart the proceedings. That leaves Congress — and the president — in a holding pattern. POLITICO

Puerto Rico was struck by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in a series of tremors over the past several days. A state of emergency was declared, though many residents are skeptical about disaster relief — the island is still recovering from 2017’s Hurricane Maria. National Geographic
