Bolton news shakes up the impeachment trial

Former national security adviser John Bolton reportedly writes in his new book that there was, in fact, a quid pro quo with Ukraine, news that caused a stir in the Senate chamber and beyond. But Trump’s legal team argued yesterday that presidents should be impeached only for criminal acts — and that the articles approved by House Democrats, and the new allegation from Bolton, don’t meet that test. Today is the last day of opening arguments. PBS NewsHour

However, the Bolton development makes it “increasingly likely” that GOP senators will agree to call witnesses in the trial, said Senator Mitt Romney. That vote is expected later this week. POLITICO

Concern over the coronavirus outbreak hit the stock markets. The Dow had its worst day in months as shares of travel and consumer-goods companies fell. The CDC urged Americans to avoid trips to China, where the number of confirmed cases and death toll continues to grow. The Wall Street Journal

A “wealth test” for immigrants got the go-ahead from the Supreme Court. The Trump administration’s plan, designed to screen green-card applicants for the likelihood they’ll need food stamps, housing, or Medicaid, had been blocked by a lower court.

“I promise you I’ll continue your legacy,” LeBron James wrote on Instagram in his first public statement since Kobe Bryant’s death. The Lakers star, who called Bryant his “brother,” said he’s “heartbroken and devastated.” Officials are still investigating the cause of the helicopter crash that killed Bryant and eight others.
