The impeachment trial’s wild cards

GOP leaders reportedly don’t have the votes they need to prevent witnesses from being called in the impeachment trial, one of Democrats’ key demands. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell originally pushed for a quick acquittal of President Trump, but that now seems increasingly unlikely. The Wall Street Journal

Meanwhile, a trio of moderate Democrats is reportedly considering voting to acquit. “Every day, I hear something, I think, ‘This is compelling, that’s compelling,’” said West Virginia’s Joe Manchin. POLITICO

Senators, starting today, have two days to question the Democrats’ prosecutors and Trump’s defense team. A vote on witnesses is expected at the end of the week.

More than 200 Americans were evacuated from Wuhan, China, amid the coronavirus outbreak. The travelers were subject to a number of screenings and are being monitored. The number of confirmed cases now tops the number of patients in the early 2000s SARS epidemic.

More soldiers were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries as a result of the Iran missile attack earlier this month. Of the 50 patients — up from 34 announced last week — most have returned to duty, the Pentagon said. Trump has come under fire for initially saying no Americans were harmed, and then downplaying the injuries. CNN Politics

A Middle East peace plan unveiled yesterday by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was immediately rejected by Palestinians. Critics also say the announcement was used as a diversion from Netanyahu’s troubles: He was indicted on corruption charges in Israel just hours before. Axios
