Coronavirus hits markets, Trump aide quarantined

Stocks fell so dramatically yesterday that a brief freeze on S&P 500 trading was triggered. The cause was twofold: A spat between Saudi Arabia and Russia sent oil prices tumbling, which compounded fears over the economic toll of the outbreak. Trump said he will today announce measures to help companies and employees cope with disruption from the virus. Bloomberg

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is self-quarantining after possibly coming into contact with someone infected. Two other lawmakers said they had contact with the same individual — and both later interacted with the president. The Washington Post

Across the Atlantic, Italy expanded restrictions on travel and public gatherings to the entire country, placing 60 million people on lockdown. The virus has killed more people in Italy than anywhere else outside China. CNN

Six states vote in Democratic primaries today, and much of the focus is on Michigan. Bernie Sanders narrowly won there in 2016, but Joe Biden is leading in recent polls. Washington voters can mail in ballots so crowds at polling stations can be avoided amid the coronavirus outbreak. NPR
