President Trump backed off the idea of quarantining New York, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut after considering it early on Saturday. Instead, the CDC issued a travel advisory urging residents of the region — which has emerged as the center of the country’s outbreak — to refrain from any “non-essential domestic travel,” effective immediately. Trump’s original comments drew a swift blowback from the states’ governors, who questioned the legality of the move. The Wall Street Journal
Meanwhile, a second wave of cases is threatening middle America. Emerging hot spots include Chicago and Detroit as well as communities like Greenville, Mississippi, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. “The county lines don’t mean anything to the virus,” said Mayor Bo Dorough of Albany, Georgia, which has more than 160 confirmed cases. Trump issued an order giving the Pentagon power to bring former U.S. troops back to active duty to assist in the coronavirus response. Some 15,000 veterans have expressed interest in rejoining the service to help, according to an Army spokesperson, though it’s unclear if anyone will be recalled involuntarily. The Washington Post
