New voices weigh in on impeachment

Constitutional experts stuck to party lines in yesterday’s hearings. The three scholars invited by Democrats said President Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine were clearly impeachable abuses of power, while the professor called by Republicans warned that investigators were barreling forward with inadequate evidence and “an abundance of anger.” The New York Times

Next steps? House Democrats want to draw up articles of impeachment before Christmas. The GOP-controlled Senate, meanwhile, is debating what a trial might look like. Politico

The White House announced big changes for food stamps. Recipients must work or participate in job training in order to qualify, but the new policy would make it harder for states to request exceptions in areas of high unemployment. The plan would cut aid for an estimated 700,000 Americans. Agriculture secretary Sonny Perdue said it will move more food-stamp recipients “toward self-sufficiency.” Bloomberg

An American sailor fatally shot two civilian government employees before killing himself at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii. A third worker was injured. Officials said the active-duty sailor served on the USS Columbia submarine, and his motive is not yet known. NBC News

Flying ever closer to the Sun: Initial results from a NASA probe that’s orbiting nearer the surface than any other satellite revealed new clues about the star’s big mysteries.
