Fears mount over coronavirus

The White House requested $2.5 billion from Congress to help combat the outbreak. Confirmed U.S. cases climbed to 53, while the situation in Iran and Italy appeared to be getting worse. The World Health Organization urged countries to prepare for a possible pandemic, but stopped short of declaring one just yet. ABC News

The Dow had its worst day in two years as stocks tumbled on fears the virus will do serious harm to the global economy. U.S. indexes are projected to stabilize this morning. CNBC

Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of sex crimes in a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement. The jury convicted the disgraced movie mogul of rape and sexual assault, which could mean five to 25 years in prison, but cleared him of the most severe charges. He’s being held at Rikers Island prison until sentencing on March 11, after which he’ll face a separate criminal trial in Los Angeles. The New York Times

A controversial new immigration rule took effect. The Trump administration yesterday began enforcing the “public charge” test, which gives officials more power to deny green-card and some visa applicants who are deemed likely to need government benefits.
