More drama in Iowa

The results of Monday’s caucuses are finally in — kind of. Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders are essentially tied for first place, with Buttigieg ahead by 1/10th of a percent in state delegate equivalents. The results followed a chaotic count marred by technical issues, and an official winner has not yet been declared. The Washington Post

The chairman of the Democratic National Committee initially demanded a recanvass on Thursday, hoping to account for any mathematical uncertainties and “assure public confidence in the results.” But the Iowa Democratic Party said that request would have to come from one of the candidates. So far, none have called for one. The Hill

Meanwhile, the Democratic candidates take the debate stage in New Hampshire tonight. After Buttigieg and Sanders’s performances in Iowa, the stakes are perhaps highest for Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, who have polled well nationally but fell short in this week’s caucuses. Trump celebrated his “total acquittal” yesterday, describing the impeachment investigations as “evil” and the Democrats as “vicious as hell.” He also called out Mitt Romney, the sole GOP senator to break ranks, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, accusing them of hypocrisy for citing their faith while supporting his impeachment. A Wuhan doctor who was among the first to warn the public about the new coronavirus died from the disease early Friday morning. Li Wenliang, who is being hailed a hero across Chinese social media, was initially targeted by the police for sharing information about the virus. The number of confirmed cases is now at least 31,420, with more than 31,000 of those in mainland China. South China Morning Post
