U.S. sets a grim new record

More than 3,000 people in the U.S. died from COVID-19 yesterday, the highest single-day death toll. Hospitalizations and case counts are soaring, and a number of states are running out of room in ICUs. CNN

The UK said people with a “significant history” of allergies should hold off on receiving Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, after two health-care workers had adverse reactions. Both recovered after treatment. Reuters

Meanwhile, Canada’s health department gave Pfizer’s vaccine emergency approval and will begin rollout as early as next week. The Wall Street Journal

The House approved a one-week spending bill to avoid a federal government shutdown. The move is designed to give lawmakers more time for emergency coronavirus-relief talks. The Washington Post

The U.S. government is suing Facebook. The Federal Trade Commission and more than 40 states filed suits against the social-media giant, accusing it of buying up rival companies to illegally squash competition. NPR

Federal authorities will join police in Columbus, Ohio, in investigating the death of Casey Goodson Jr., a 23-year-old Black man who was shot and killed outside his home by a sheriff’s deputy. Columbus Dispatch
