Nation on edge as protests and police response intensify

The seventh day of demonstrations against racism and police brutality saw increased law-enforcement presence and, in many cases, the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. The Guardian

In his first address since the unrest began, President Trump threatened to deploy the military if local leaders don’t take more aggressive action to quell the unrest. After the remarks, police used tear gas to disperse a peaceful crowd near the White House so he could visit a nearby church that was damaged. Vox

Two separate autopsies determined George Floyd’s death was a homicide, but differed on the cause: An outside expert hired by Floyd’s family said he died of "asphyxiation from sustained pressure" due to the officers kneeling on his neck and back, while the county medical examiner attributed his death to heart failure while being restrained. CNN

Louisville’s police chief was fired after it emerged that officers involved in the fatal shooting of a local business-owner during a curfew violation did not activate their body cameras. The requirement was put in place in March, after Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in a raid of her home — and there was no footage of the incident. USA TODAY

The first human trial of a potential coronavirus treatment made from antibodies is underway. The drug, derived from the blood sample of a survivor and made by Eli Lilly, is being tested for whether it can help patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Reuters

Voting by mail faces a big test in today’s eight primary elections. The process and voter-participation levels are being watched closely for early clues to how states might conduct November’s presidential election. The Wall Street Journal
